Thought of the Week
Two weeks ago I threw out the idea of divergent thinking. I see divergent thinking as a core strategy in moving our students from acquisition to understanding. In elementary math, students learn that 4x4=16. Divergent thinking suggest that we ask students why it equals 16. A teacher could ask students to identify as many explanations as possible for why 16 is the answer. This understanding of the why is crucial to building lasting learning. As we look at divergent thinking and strategies to support it, one area to look at is the Visible Thinking Project at Harvard. Visible thinking is an instructional approach that seeks to make learning visible in multiple ways within the classroom. Many of you may already use visible thinking strategies (called "routines") in your classroom. Visible thinking allows students to gain a greater sense of "why" and allows us, as educators, to visualize our students' learning processes. #DoverProud ShoutoutsStudent Visits ABC27 Sophie Barnes toured ABC27 along with Anne Sheffer to gain a better perspective on the business of broadcast journalism. The award, given to one student per school per year, recognizes an individual for dependability, service, leadership, and patriotism.
