Thought of the Week
and observations. The video above is of a teacher who describes the chalk talk process and outcomes in her classroom. At DAHS, chalk talks may be a natural extension of a Type 1 Collins Writing activity. For example, we ask our students in a Biology class to write down at least three things they know or want to know about DNA. Once they have completed the individual Type 1, we ask our students to silently add their responses to the board around the original prompt. As students record responses, others are encouraged to add to, question, or dispute statements on the board by writing them as stems to the original response. This activity then branches into a discussion opportunity and can be revisited at the end of instructional time to highlight learning and/or serve as an informal formative assessment within the lesson. Many teachers display the final product in the room during the unit to show the learning process. If you have a chance this week, try it with your students. Admittedly, many are hesitant because they want to respond verbally. That's OK. The process allows for safety in writing responses so that even our shyest student is engaged. If you try one share your feedback. I would love to know how it goes. #DoverProud ShoutoutsStudent Records Her 100th Hit Natalie Outright recorded her 100th hit this week on a 2-run double in the softball team's win over West York. There was a large crowd on hand to support Natalie and the team, and to mark this milestone in her athletic career. Video Makes the Top-100 Out of the 1000s of videos submitted in the Duralife Locker Challenge, the video created our students at DAHS has been named a top-100 video. The video now moves into the judging stage of the competition. Thank you to everyone who supported and voted for the video. I've been using the Chalk Talk activity in my classroom for years--back when it actually happened using real chalk on an actual chalk board. :) It's an effective engagement tool to use in a mix of other things.
